Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community

Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community

From Library Journal
DeMello (formerly with Univ. of California, Davis) presents an anthropological study of tattooing and tattoo communities in North America. Both a researcher and a “tattooed person” who is married to a tattooist–both “insider and outsider,” that is–she describes the rigid hierarchies within tattoo communities (how tattooists jealously guard secrets from outsiders and newcomers) and engages in a broader analysis of tattoos as socioeconomic indicators. She looks (more…)

Small Feminine Tattoos

Tattoo as a form of expression and individuality is no longer exclusively for men. Women of today also wear tattoos as a form of fashion or a representation of who they really are. Although getting a tattoo will cause bearable pain to a person, women endure this pain order to achieve self fulfillment.

Tattoos have so many interpretation and meaning. It may be a picture of a long departed family member, a departed pet, an achievement, or even a chapter on one’s life that they don’t want to forget. For others, tattoos do not have to carry a story; they just have to look good and trendy.

Small Tattoos for Everyone

Shoulder Tattoo

Shoulder Tattoo

It seems like everyone I meet these days has a tattoo, both men and women. There are tattoos of every imaginable design; there are large tattoos that can coverpractically a person’s entire body. There are small tattoos that can easily be hidden or proudly displayed. There’s no reason today not to enjoy at least one small tattoo.

Small tattoos are very popular today for many reasons. They are perfect for first-timers to get a taste of what tattooing is all about; they can usually be completed in under an hour; and, because they are easily hidden, they are perfect for those who don’t want Mom to know!   Even employers who are loosening their standards on tattoos prefer them small and discreet. In today’s age, tattoos are very popular, and it seems as of most people now have at least one small tattoo somewhere, hidden away waiting to be discovered. Of course, tattoos have become so widely accepted, that you’ll also often see them on exposed areas of the body, such as the wrist.  Tattoos on the wrist can still be hidden away by a piece of jewelry such as a watch, or a bangle bracelet.

There are a few things to think about when deciding to pursue a wrist tattoo. Read more »

Small Feminine Tattoo Design

Women today are getting a tattoo as a fashion statement. Scary tattoos and gang tattoos are things of the past. Women today get a tattoo as a body art that represents their personality. For some women, a cute and feminine tattoo design is sufficient to satisfy their fashion tattoo urges.

The most important thing to consider in getting a tattoo is that it is your own personal choice. When consulting other persons, take only their opinion if you think it is worthy of considering, otherwise, just get the tattoo.

Flower Tattoos - Perfect Small Tattoos

sunflower_tattoo

Flower tattoos are a favorite of a lot of women. I could write an entire book about nothing but flower tattoos, as the possiblities are endless!

If you see a small tattoo on a friend and it happens to be a flower, ask her what it means, where she had it done, and if she’s happy with it. I have a friend who has a beautiful hibiscus tattoo on her right hip, in gorgeous colors of coral and red; it’s stunning. I have another friend who has a tattoo of orange blossoms on her shoulder, also quite beautiful. Read more »

Name Tattoos

Tattoos do not have to be an animal like a lion or a snake. Tattoos just have to something that you can be proud of and that you can show to other people.

Tattoo designs are plenty and that fact makes choosing the right tattoo even harder. If you have many styles and designs to choose from, you will have a hard time selecting the most beautiful and best that will suit you. If you are confused on what design to have, you can always settle in using a name.

The World of Tattoo: An Illustrated History

The World of Tattoo: An Illustrated History

Despite a growing fascination with tattooing among social scientists–and the popularity of tattoos themselves in general–the practice of tattooing has lacked a comprehensive historical record. Until very recently, there was no good context for writing a serious world history of tattooing. This new volume conveys the richness of the history of tattooing from antiquity to the present day.Unlike most other tattoo books that describe one aspect this book conveys the overall picture. Many celebrities and the rich and famous in the spotlight types are now seen flashing exotic tattoos on various body parts. Not only are the female celebrities showing off tattoos, but also the men are seen with tattoos, as they have become totally acceptable in today’s society.

Tattoo Pain - It Doesn’t Have to Hurt

When your friends see your new tattoo, most will ask you the same question - did that hurt?  How much did it hurt?  Chances are that you’ve asked the same question yourself when you’ve spied a new tattoo on a friend or acquaintance.  The truth is that no answer is really correct.  Unfortunately, there’s no true way to tell how much pain there will be when you get a tattoo.  Maybe it won’t be as painful as you imagined, or else it could actually hurt a little bit more than you expected.  Sometimes it’s possible that getting a tattoo could hurt more than it should, for example if you’re extremely nervous or if you haven’t prepared your skin properly. Small Tattoos - Preparing for your First Tattoo

You will want to carefully choose the tattoo parlor where you get your tattoo.  Make sure that the tattoo parlor is absolutely spotless; also make sure that the tattoo artist is clean!  I know, that sounds ridiculous, but remember that this person is going to be using a needle on your skin, so make sure that you’re extra choosy about where you go to get your first small tattoo! Ankle tattoos are a very sexy tattoo choice, as they will draw a man’s eyes straight to your leg, and enhance the high heels that you might be wearing. It’s extremely easy to display and model a beautiful ankle tattoo, but it’s also easy to hide if you have the need to do so. Just slip on a pair of jeans or slacks and no one will know that you have a tattoo. Read more »

Small Finger Tattoos

Getting a tattoo means having permanent ink on your body. It is like an accessory that is very hard to remove. As such, if you want to have a tattoo, you must be certain that the design is what you really want and the location in the body where you will put it.

Tattoos can be placed in any part of your body, even your face. If you are prohibited to have a tattoo because of school or work, it is a must that you just put it in a part of the body where it cannot be seen. If your purpose of getting a tattoo is to show it off, then any part of the body may be selected.

Small Tattoos for Men

There are many options for small tattoos for men. While women may choose butterflies and flowers, few men would make that choice! Women also tend to choose their tattoos based on wearing them as if they were a piece of jewelry, such as flowers tattooed around a wrist.

Men on the other hand, lean towards some type of identity symbol rather than a tattoo that is merely decorative. Read more »

Japanese Flower Tattoo

Small tattoos are common because they are cheaper, more stylish, and more eye-catching than huge tattoos. A big tattoo looks very dirty on one’s skin and getting it will cause you a great deal of pain, not to mention it’s high cost. Tattoos are created for self expression. If the purpose sought to be achieved is already met through a small tattoo, then a huge tattoo is not necessary.

There are many tattoo designs to choose from, but nowadays, many people choose a flower as a tattoo for their body art. Flower tattoo is a great tattoo design because it is flexible and can be easily bundled with other designs. Also, flowers have different meanings and representations that are not available in other designs. An example is the daisy. It is a flower that embodies loyalty in love, faith, purity and innocence.
